Sewage Smell Raises a Stink

Josh Pringle, CFRA - Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Ottawa’s Manager of Environment Services says the City of Ottawa has never received complaints about the smell of sewage near the Keefer St. regulator.

Dixon Weir heard from residents during a media event to showcase new technology to reduce the flow of raw sewage into the Ottawa River, with residents saying it smells like a “sewage lagoon.”

The Keefer Street regulator site is one of five locations that will have Real Time Controls installed to reduce sewage overflows. The city is spending millions to reduce sewage overflows by 65 per cent by next year.

Weir told reporters and residents he could “smell” the problem, and the city will address the problem “immediately.”

Resident Karen Woldike told Weir that she “physically got ill twice” from the smell of sewage.
