Smaller Ont. communities to get $725M for water, waste management

CBC News - Tuesday, August 26, 2008

Communities with populations under 100,000 will be eligible for $725 million in federal and provincial funding under the Building Ontario fund.

The money is targeted for cleaner water and better waste management, federal Environment Minister John Baird and Ontario Municipal Affairs Minister Jim Watson announced Tuesday at the annual meeting of the Association of Municipalities in Ottawa.

A deal providing Ontario with access to $3.09 billion in federal infrastructure money under the Building Canada plan was announced in July. The money was to be matched by provincial funds.

However, at the time, there were no details of how the program would be rolled out or how municipalities would apply for funding.

Tuesday’s announcement follows Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty’s announcement Monday of $1.1 billion for infrastructure projects across Ontario.
