Spring Fever Hits the Capital Region

Thursday, April 23, 2009

In celebration of Earth Day, the National Capital Commission (NCC) wishes to thank local volunteers who will take part in the 11th annual Ottawa River shoreline cleanup, in collaboration with Ottawa Riverkeeper and CREDDO (Conseil régional de l’environnement et du développement durable de l’Outaouais), as part of the “Spring Cleaning the Capital” programs organized by the cities of Ottawa and Gatineau.

The spring cleaning will take place on Sunday, April 26, 2009, from 9 am to 12 pm. This popular activity is expected to involve more than 80 volunteers who will undertake the extensive cleanup of NCC lands along the Ottawa River. Throughout the morning, volunteers on the Ontario side will pick up litter from the shoreline between Mud Lake and the Canadian War Museum. Volunteers on the Quebec side will clean up the shoreline at Leamy Lake, Moussette Park and behind the Université du Québec en Outaouais.

The NCC would also like to thank Responsible Dog Owners of Canada who will be cleaning the two off-leash dog parks in the Greenbelt (Bruce Pit and Conroy Pit) once again this spring.

For more information about registering for spring cleaning activities on NCC lands, please contact Ottawa Riverkeeper at 613-321-1120 (Ontario shoreline) or CREDDO at 819-772-4925 (Quebec shoreline). You may also contact the NCC at 613-239-5000, 1-800-465-1867 (toll-free), 613-239-5090 (TTY) or 1-866-661-3530 (toll-free TTY), or visit the NCC website at www.canadascapital.gc.ca.
