SRBT seeks new licence

ANTHONY DIXON, The Daily Observer - Friday, June 13, 2008

Company wants to resume processing tritium products

The second of two days of public hearings into SRB Technologies’ (SRBT) request for a licence amendment wrapped up Thursday.

The Pembroke manufacturer of tritium-based light sources has asked the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission for a licence amendment that would allow the company to again process tritium.

According to SRBT president Stephane Levesque, the company’s long-term survival hangs in the balance as it needs to resume tritium processing to increase its revenue and to be able to provide the financial guarantee for decommissioning required as part of the commission staff’s proposed amended licence.

The commission turned down the company’s application for an operating licence renewal in January 2007, instead issuing an amended licence in May that allowed the company to receive tritium-filled light sources from other facilities that it could sell to its customers.

Operating in this manner, SRBT implemented a number of changes requested by the commission and then asked for a licence amendment.

On the first day of the public hearings into the amendment request in April, commission staff proposed a two-year licence for SRBT that would permit it to return to processing tritium.

During the second public hearing on Thursday, the commission considered oral and written presentations from interveners both for and against the amendment.
