City staff have implemented most recommendations that followed a major sewage spill from the Keefer Regulator in August 2006, but some “additional areas” still need attention, a staff report says.
The device jammed open for for 12 days, allowing one billion litres of raw sewage to spill into the Ottawa River. The city was charged under the Ontario Water Resources Act and fined.
In a report to be presented next week to the planning and environment committee, staff say that recommendations made in two separate reviews of the incident have been completed or are “well advanced.”
A few recommendations from a follow-up report still require attention, however, including further examination of risks, the consideration of after-hours cross-department communications and more discussions with the Ministry of the Environment, and “public promotion of all the good work and success achieved in environmental services,” the report says.
