Storm runoff, high water levels close some area beaches

Liam Casey, The Ottawa Citizen - Wednesday, July 02, 2008

A no-swimming advisory remained in effect for Westboro and Petrie Island beaches yesterday because of high bacterial counts from runoff caused by recent heavy rains. Britannia and Mooney’s Bay Beach remained open with lifeguards on duty from noon to 7 p.m.

Leamy Lake Beach is closed because of raised water levels that pose a safety risk to swimmers.

The public still has access to the National Capital Commission’s other beaches at O’Brien, Blanchet, Breton, Parent and La Pêche in Gatineau Park. Lifeguards are on duty from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Call 613-580-6744, ext.13219 for automated updates on water quality for Ottawa beaches, 613-239-5000 for conditions at the NCC’s beaches in Gatineau.
