The river’s heritage

Editorial, The Pembroke Daily Observer - Wednesday, May 07, 2008

It is time to move forward on the Ottawa River heritage designation.

A simple request has become a major political issue in the area and has raised some questions.

But those questions are answered.

To have the Ottawa River become part of the Canadian Heritage Rivers system will not create development problems on what is one of the Ottawa Valley’s greatest assets.

The Canadian Heritage Rivers System has no legislative authority says the organization’s senior planner Brian Grimsey.

The development of the river is still managed by the various levels of government in the country.

“It (the Canadian Heritage Rivers system) has no mechanisms to allow or disallow anything,” Mr Grimsey said.

In fact, having the heritage designation for the river seems to be a win-win situation for the municipalities and the people who live along the famous waterway.

The goal of the organization seems to be to enhance the quality of the rivers in the system and to ensure that the heritage, which is very important for the Ottawa River, is protected.

With that in mind, the time has come to have the papers signed and the river finally get a chance to receive the status it deserves.
