Mayor Jim Watson admits it’s “frustrating” to see the red flag flying at public beaches this summer.
Watson says the City of Ottawa must proceed with phase 3 of the Ottawa River Action Plan and construct the underground sewage storage tanks to stop sewage overflows.
The Westboro Beach has been closed 13 times so far this summer due to high counts of e-coli in the water, while Mooney’s Bay has been closed 11 days.
The Mayor says he has written the Federal and Ontario Governments to request funding to construct the $130 million storage tanks.
Commenting on the number of red flag days this summer at Ottawa beaches, Watson says the higher amounts of rain this spring and summer can be blamed for the closed beaches.
The City has said it has reduced the amount of raw sewage flowing into the Ottawa River through the Ottawa River Action Plan.
