Construction on the Ottawa River
Proponents of the Chats Falls Boat Bypass project have been issued a stop work order as they have been working instream despite provincial regulations that do not allow work in the river between March 15 and July 15. Regulations are in place to protect early migration and fish spawning in the river. “The proponents are demonstrating a lack of respect for the rules of the river” says Meredith Brown, the Riverkeeper. The province is currently investigating the project…stay tuned for the course of action.
Our Annual General Meeting held on June 13 was attended by over 100 people and at the meeting 13 members were elected to serve on the board of directors. A hearty welcome to our three new directors: Linda Hiles, Chad Nelson and Alan-Paul Dane. Biographies of all the directors are available on our website.
Parham Momtahan is an avid paddler and a dedicated river steward. To show his ongoing support, he arranged for donations to Ottawa Riverkeeper rather than gifts on the occasion of his 50th birthday. As the money will go towards the boat fund, Parham became our “first mate” of our Patrol Boat! As a member of the Waterkeeper Alliance, Ottawa Riverkeeper is required to patrol our river system.
