Nuclear Regulator Dismisses Public as being “Confused”

Decisions regarding the uncontrolled release of tritium into the Ottawa River rest in the hands of a select few. The issue is complex but one thing is clear: the public is not being properly consulted.

Ottawa Riverkeeper spent 11 hours on Monday November 27th at a “public hearing” of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC). The hearing was a meeting of the tribunal of the Commission which heard evidence as to whether or not SRB Technologies should receive a renewed license to process tritium at its current location in the City of Pembroke. At present the groundwater contamination at the site is so severe that the company is operating under several restrictions.

The CNSC has granted SRBT an extended two month operating license while they make a decision on this case. The final decision will be released January 31, 2007.

We struck gold
when we found volunteers who care about the health of the Ottawa River!

On this International Volunteer Day, the staff would like to thank the volunteers for their contribution of time and skills to Ottawa Riverkeeper. In 2006, 165 individuals contributed about 5,300 hours to many projects and committees:

  • Volunteer directors help guide and grow the organization while our organizational work is done through a number of volunteer committees.
  • Riverwatchers act as our eyes and ears on the watershed from Laniel, Quebec to Orleans, Ontario.
  • Translators give us the means to share our message in both French and English: website, enews, and river report.
  • Over 40 contributors made the first state of the river report a success.
  • Pro-bono law students from the University of Ottawa are actively participating in the Clean Water workshop.
  • Numerous volunteers help us during our special events: shoreline clean-ups, educational programs, triathlon, and much more.

A special thank you to the Community Foundation of Ottawa and HIVA Environmental Fund. With their support, we are able to engage volunteers and strengthen our community outreach.

For more info, please contact Delphine Hasle, our Director of Outreach who coordinates the efforts of our brilliant volunteers.
