Ottawa Riverkeeper’s Event By Ray Renton, 1st Dunrobin Venturer Advisor

The First Dunrobin Venturers participated in the second annual Ottawa Riverkeeper’s Fall Paddle and Clean Up of Bate and surrounding islands on Saturday, October 28. The event was envisioned last year by Laurel Rosene, a leader of the Glen Cairn Venturer Company as a way of giving back to the community. The weather was quite adverse over the Champlain Bridge Islands and shorelines …..what’s a lot of rain and wind when we’re all having fun!

The Ottawa River was approximately two feet higher than normal for this time of year and moving very swiftly, so the Fall Paddle portion was cancelled, although a few Venturers took advantage of the high rapids to play in the standing waves with kayaks after the cleanup.

Groups composed of volunteers from the public as well as mostly Venturers were assigned various island and land shorelines to pick up flotsam, jetsam and general litter debris. Everything from car parts to sink stoppers was collected; and some things which were less interesting or less visually appealing or a danger to personal health and the outdoor environment were also bagged or removed.

A variety of local businesses provided sponsored items or support.. Venturer Companies from the Ottawa Region provided volunteers, logistics and tarps for protection from the wind and rain. In addition to the clean up, a silent action was run for outdoor gear to raise funds for the annual project.

We recommend the event to all as a good way to spend a few hours on a part of the river you do not normally get to view or enjoy. Mark it on your calendar for next year.
