Gaining a bird’s eye view of the watershed is extremely important in understanding the health of our natural resources and exposing environmental degradation and illegal practices that otherwise might go unnoticed. The Ottawa Riverkeeper Air Force members not only provide the extra protection our waters need, but also contribute to public and media awareness of environmental issues in the Ottawa River watershed.
DOUG SMITH
Doug Smith, a recreational pilot formed a new group of Riverwatcher. In July 2005, Doug organized the first meeting of the Ottawa Riverkeeper Air Force at the South Renfrew Airport. Now, the recreational pilots fly almost on a daily basis along the Ottawa River and its tributaries. The group enjoy combining their flight time with a greater cause.
If we receive a report or have concerns about problems such as sediment plumes, oil or sewage spills, vast algae blooms, erosion and clear cut logging, or manure spreading on frozen land, our pilots are on standby to investigate. The pilot will record the GPS location, take pictures, AND report back to Ottawa Riverkeeper. Ottawa Riverkeeper will follow up with the authorities and contact the local media if appropriate.
In 2007, Duncan Marshall of Marshall Maruska Aerial Photographs joined our team of River Watchers. As Duncan undertakes his aerial photographic assignments, he keeps an eye on our river and reports to the Riverkeeper when he observes a change. Duncan also supports our work by allowing Ottawa Riverkeeper to use his photographs to raise awareness.
