LOCAL ISSUES & RECENT NEWS
The Petrie Islands are a unique wetland and island complex on the Ottawa River downstream from the city of Ottawa. Most of the area is currently under municipal ownership. The islands and adjacent backwaters provide a rich habitat for many species of wildlife and plants, some fairly rare, and offer a unique opportunity to enjoy a wilderness experience close to a major urban centre.

In 1998, the Friends of Petrie Island came together to promote the conservation of the western portion of the Petrie Islands and the development of passive recreation facilities just west of the sand operation. The Friends, in cooperation with municipal authorities, have:
- Cleaned up the island
- Developed a picnic area and nature trails
- Provided supervision
- Designed and distributed interpretive material
- Held open houses to increase public awareness about this sensitive area
- Conducted various surveys and petitions
- Worked with other groups to help ensure that the area will be protected and appreciated
