River devotee and nature photographer Alan W. Todd is our eyes and ears on Stillwater Creek.
Stillwater Creek is an urban tributary of the Ottawa River that runs through a suburban neighbourhood and then enters the main stem on the west side of Andrew Haydon Park in the City of Ottawa (former City of Nepean).
The City of Ottawa Official Plan rated Stillwater Creek as highly worthy of protection. This watershed was historically agricultural with marsh waterfront that is currently residential with mainly man-made shoreline. Today, just the wetland creek source remains natural. The creek is home to a sizeable deer population, geese, ducks, and songbirds.
The three most significant areas of concern to the local Riverwatcher are:
- the Marina (Nepean sailing club);
- Nortel campus stormwater reservoir being adjacent to a significant wetland area; and
- new development and its associated shoreline destruction.
Over the years, local residents noticed more sediment deposits in the delta at the point where the creek empties into the Ottawa River.
