Tributary - Watts Creek Riverwatcher

Watts Creek, small urban tributary of the Ottawa River in Kanata, runs from Angus Street to Shirley Bay at the Department of National Defense Rifle Range. The creek flows through urban development and developped land owned by the Department of National Defense and Communications Research Centre Canada. There are 2 principal tributaries: Kanata Beaver Pond to Watts Creek (2.5 miles) and Beaverbrook area to Watts Creek (1 mile).

An 1879 map shows Watts creek runnin through three private properties in Kanata, then going through eight private properties which are now NCC greenbelt; then through 3 properties north of Carling Avenue which are now Communications Research Centre Canada and DND rifle range before emptying into Shirley’s Bay.

Water runoff from residential, commercail and high tech areas is the main concern on this tributary. Over the years, the creek became more turbide as the water flow decreased. The muddiness orginates in two places:

  1. where the NCC paved pathway underpass a small road in the greenbelt
  2. at the edge of the cornfield on old Hwy 17B.

Ducks Unlimited are active on Watts Creek.
