Butternut
Scientific Name: Juglans cinerea
Butternut is native to eastern Canada but has been listed as an endangered species due to a fungal disease, called Butternut Canker, that kills these trees.
It is part of the walnut family, can grow up to 30 m tall and has edible nuts in the fall. Butternut commonly grows in moist, well-drained soil along streams and does not like the shade. It has traditionally been most common in the Ottawa Valley on the alluvial islands of the lower Ottawa River.
