Current Conversations: The Rights of Rivers – July 30th, 2025

What rights do rivers have? We host a conversation on Indigenous perspectives on the rights of rivers. Join in on Wednesday, July 30th from 6 pm to 8 pm.

Join us for Current Conversations, a summer speaker series hosted in Ottawa Riverkeeper’s Learning Lab at the NCC River House, every other Wednesday evening. Each event will feature interesting speakers or presenters, refreshments, and a chance to learn, discuss, and ask questions about the river.

Gilbert Whiteduck, former chief of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinabeg community, knowledge holder at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law, Common Law, and member of the Tenàgàdino Alliance working towards the legal rights of the Tenàgàdino Zibi/Gatineau River, and Abraham Francis, former Environmental Services Manager for the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne and vice-president/director of Talking Rivers working towards the education and promotion of the rights of rivers, will share their knowledge and experience in the protection of rivers and the recognition of their rights. Join us for this enriching conversation to learn about Indigenous expertise about rivers, their rights, our responsibilities towards them, and their importance.
