iCleanup
What is iCleanup?
iCleanup is your all-in-one shoreline cleanup app. It is a powerful tool that allows you to track every aspect of your shoreline cleanups, be it the weight you collect or the number of bags you use. You can even share exactly where you were, what type of waste you found, and send in your photos!
Not being able to gather in large groups should not stop us from protecting the Ottawa River watershed. You can still clean your local shoreline on your own or with the people you live with! That is why we invite you to safely take to the shores with iCleanup, where you can track your cleanups to see how much waste you and the watershed community have kept out of our waterways!

Frequently Asked Questions
Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person events were limited or even forbidden. However, Ottawa Riverkeeper, along with the Pacte d’amitié, which consists of the MRC d’Argenteuil, MRC de Papineau, and the United Counties of Prescott and Russell, have been hard at work trying to make environmental protection more accessible to all, especially online.
We wanted to bring people together, all across the watershed, to work on the common goal of river protection. Inspired by the interjurisdictional work of the Pacte d’amitié, we decided on a tool that everyone in the watershed could use to measure their impact. Making you feel connected to a larger community effort was equally important. Enter iCleanup!
Shoreline cleanups are a great way to give back to your local environment by picking up pieces of litter in and around our waterways. This helps protect our watershed’s flora and fauna from potentially harmful materials that fish can commonly confuse as food.
Look no further than the Shoreline Cleanup Community! Created by Ottawa Riverkeeper for you, this group is for people who are passionate about striving towards cleaner rivers and lakes all across the Ottawa River watershed.
This is a safe space for you to engage with others, ask questions, get informed, and most of all, build a community dedicated to protecting our waterways. The Shoreline Cleanup Community is a place to share our experiences, photos, and videos related to our shorelines.
Whether you want to organize a solo, household, or community shoreline cleanup, our Guide to Solo Shoreline Cleanups is an excellent resource for you to use. This comprehensive guide provides everything you need to organize a shoreline cleanup safely, even during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Yes! iCleanup is for everyone interested in shoreline cleanups and protecting their waterways, regardless of their shoreline cleanup experience or where they live in the Ottawa River watershed.
Yes, of course! By visiting icleanup.ca, you can access iCleanup on both your smartphone and computer.
iCleanup is a progressive web application (PWA) and can be accessed in most browsers by visiting the icleanup.ca. However, it can also be added to a phone’s home screen and be accessed like any other app. Doing this creates an app icon that acts as a shortcut to the app online. Due to the nature of the app, an internet connection is still required to use it, even when added as an app on your home screen.
iPhone
Once you are on the iCleanup website, tap the Share button and then tap Add to Home Screen. Once this step has been completed, an iCleanup icon will appear on your iPhone’s home screen.
Android
Once you have logged into iCleanup and are on the dashboard, you will see a “Add to home screen” button. Once this step has been completed, an iCleanup icon will appear on your Android’s home screen.
Please note that after you have added the icon to your home screen, you will not see the “Add to home screen” button again. To see the button again, you will need to remove the icon from your phone and clear your browser cache for the button to appear again.
When we were developing iCleanup, we wanted the app to be universally accessible, fast, and easy to update. For that reason, we decided that a progressive web app (PWA) would be better for our community, putting your user experience first.
The same way you would first access it on your smartphone! Head over to icleanup.ca and sign in if you are a returning user or sign up if it is your first time. Some browsers will also let you download iCleanup as a desktop app.
iCleanup is available in English, and in French (as iCollecte). When you access the web address for iCleanup, the page will automatically detect your default browser language. If you are not seeing the app in your desired language, please check these settings on your phone or web browser.
Additionally, when creating your account you will be given the option of default language. This setting can also be changed at any time after your account is created by going to the profile section.
Once you have signed up, from your iCleanup dashboard, click the button for “Add cleanup.” You can then indicate the date of your cleanup, the weight, and bags you collected, send us a photo, and even indicate where you did your cleanup, along with many exciting things.
To edit a cleanup, go to the Past Cleanups section on your iCleanup dashboard. You will see a list of your previous cleanups and a big button that says “Edit.” Once you click it, you will be able to edit the details of one of your last cleanups.
To delete a cleanup, go to the Past Cleanups section on your iCleanup dashboard. Click the “Edit” button. Once you click it, instead of editing the details of one of your last cleanups, click “Next” to go to the following page. At the bottom, you will see a button that says “Delete.”
Absolutely! All you have to do is indicate how many people you did your cleanup with when registering it. Just remember not to have multiple people submit the same cleanup on the app!
To protect your privacy, we only ask for your birth year for statistical purposes to understand what demographic groups in our community use iCleanup.
