The City of Gatineau and Ottawa Riverkeeper collaborate to make daily water quality tests at beaches a reality
Audrey Bureau, Municipal Councillor for Aylmer, and Ottawa Riverkeeper’s Community Outreach Coordinator, Alejandro Prescott-Cornejo, met at parc des Cèdres to film a video to share the excellent news.
Gatineau, July 7, 2021 – The City of Gatineau has now begun conducting daily water quality tests at all its beaches in response to Ottawa Riverkeeper’s recommendations. In 2017, the City tested the water once a week. Over the years, the frequency increased to twice per week, then five times a week, before becoming a daily occurrence this year.

The Municipal Councillor for Aylmer, Audrey Bureau, is encouraged by this progress for public health and the environment, and she hopes that the City continues to implement Ottawa Riverkeeper’s recommendations. According to her, “if the City of Gatineau wants to become an urban outdoor destination, overcoming environmental and public health challenges is crucial.”
Last week, Audrey Bureau and Ottawa Riverkeeper’s Community Outreach Coordinator, Alejandro Prescott-Cornejo, met at parc des Cèdres to film a video (in French) to share the excellent news.
This new measure is the first among several suggestions adopted by the City to improve the safety of recreational water quality for all. A full list of Ottawa Riverkeeper’s recommendations can be found in their Report on Recreational Water Quality at Gatineau Beaches.
Ottawa Riverkeeper is overjoyed about this step forward to protect the river, but also the swimming and aquatic sport communities. Thanks to this collaboration, we will be able to ensure better water quality for Aylmer, Gatineau, and the entire Ottawa River watershed.

Before heading to the beach this summer, citizens of Gatineau can find water quality test results on the City of Gatineau’s web site and on the Swim Guide app.
The City of Gatineau also continues to take steps to obtain a Blue Flag certification at its beaches and roll out measures to increase universal accessibility.
