After many months of waiting for the results of the public consultation from Natural Resources Canada on a new Radioactive Waste Policy for Canada, a draft of the new policy has been released for public comments. The result is… disappointing.

Ottawa Riverkeeper has been tackling the issue of nuclear waste in our watershed for many years. What have we been doing, and why will this year be important? In this update, we explore the history of the issue, how it is changing, and what we are doing about it.

With the federal election looming, we thought it would be a good time to share Ottawa Riverkeeper’s main areas of concern, to inspire you when considering who to vote for.

On November 16th Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources announced that the government was launching a review and public engagement on Canada’s Radioactive Waste Policy. We now have a chance to help the government build a stronger policy that lives up to international standards, and most importantly, protects our waterways.

In 2019, Ottawa Riverkeeper was provided with participant funding to submit a written intervention concerning the impacts of the Chalk River Laboratories to the Ottawa River. This is a summary of our submission.
