Understanding the Impact of Road Salt in our Waterways – April 30th, 2021
Road salt use in our watershed is as ubiquitous as winter itself. While road salt can help keep us safe when commuting on slippery surfaces, when used in excess it can be harmful to aquatic environments and the species that live within them.
Over the past two winters, Ottawa Riverkeeper has been collecting data on creeks in the Ottawa-Gatineau area to see if road salt use is contributing to harmful levels of chloride in local creeks.
Join Biologist Katy Alambo as she presents our findings, some of the steps we are taking to tackle the issues, and what you can do to limit your use of road salt.
